Generating success from a sales meeting can be challenging even at the best of times. An economic downturn, tightening of customer budgets and increasing levels of competition has made your quest for new clients even more difficult.

A positive outcome will likely come to those who understand that spectacular success is always preceded by unspectacular preparation.

As the stakes are high, you must become obsessive about preparation.

It’s best to get yourself in the habit of doing these things sooner rather than later.

1. Consider their needs, desires and frustrations.

What is it that motivates the other party?

Brainstorming all the possible scenarios that are driving them will allow you to frame the direction of your pitch.

2. Anticipate how they will respond.

Prepare for the questions that will come back from the other party so that you are able to answer with confidence and clarity.

3. Develop an outline for what you want to say.

Don’t rely on on a PowerPoint presentation to read from word for word.

Whether you are using a presentation or not, creating a structure/script relating to the key points of discussion will ensure you don’t go off message.

4. Practice your delivery with different people.

Role-play the meeting several times in order to prepare for varying reactions.

Not only will role-play allow you to prepare for differing responses, it will continue to improve the quality of your delivery.

5. Ask trusted colleagues to highlight unaddressed areas.

Welcoming feedback from reliable advisors will provide an opportunity to consider any blind spots.

6. Have a positive mindset.

Put yourself in the best possible state of mind before the meeting.

If your preparation has been detailed and thorough, you can feel confident that the meeting will have a fruitful outcome.
